PERU

Our Forecast: 26 November 2010 –The government is considering raising royalties in the mining sector; mining firms are likely to accept the changes.

Outcome: 29 September 2011: President Humala announced the signing of 3 new mining laws, including a new mining tax and modifications to royalty laws.

ECUADOR

Our Forecast: 8 February 2011 - President Correa's attempt at reforming the constitution increases the risks of banks being forced to sell their non-banking assets.

Outcome: on 29 September, Congress passed an anti-monopoly law, prohibiting bank shareholders, with a bank ownership stake above 6%, from having other business assets outside the banking sector.

COLOMBIA

Our Forecast: 20 January 2011 – Coal firm Cerrejón is likely to face regular acts of sabotage in 2011, as La Guajira-based FARC units rely on extortion funds.

Outcome: On 29 October 2011, In Albania, Guajira, alleged rebels blew up an electricity pylon at the EL Cerrejon coal mine, wounding 2 workers; operations were suspended.
