TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. EVERY POINT ON THE PLANET: EA’S LATEST GIS BREAKTHROUGH

Every Point on the Planet (EPOP) is Exclusive Analysis’ intelligence platform for differentiating the risk of political violence at 500m2 resolution globally.

This article examines some of the intelligence challenges and modelling problems that we face arising from turning human and open source information into location intelligence.

2. EUROZONE CRISIS: IMPACT ON EMERGING MARKET PROJECT FINANCE

The ten European banks most heavily involved in project finance in H1 2011 have a combined exposure of $445 billion to PIIGS. This exposure raises risks that projects in the pipeline could be delayed or cancelled, with consequences for suppliers and contractors. Equally, there are likely to be opportunities for alternative sources of funding. This paper looks at these risks and opportunities with a focus on projects in emerging markets, in particular, Russia, Ghana and Brazil.

3. CHINA: INDUSTRIAL AND URBAN UNREST IN THE THREE-YEAR OUTLOOK

In the three-year outlook, manufacturing and industrial operations are likely to experience growing risks of organised violent labour unrest, resulting in increased property damage and operational loss.

4. IRAQ: OIL & GAS SECTOR OUTLOOK

This article provides the outlook for the key influence groups in Iraq in 2012, taking particular consideration of parliamentary dynamics, provincial power structures and local opposition movements.

5. BRAZIL: CURRENCY AND TRADE RISKS

Recent interest rate cuts have heightened speculation that President Rousseff’s pro-industry government is exerting significant influence over the decisions of a supposedly independent Central Bank. This article explores the economic and political background behind these interest rate cuts, the capital controls currently in place and the increasingly protectionist policies of the Rousseff government.

6. INDONESIA: ICT SECTOR OUTLOOK

Indonesia’s domestic consumer market, combined with relatively low cost manufacturing, make it an attractive market and a potential production hub for ICT and electronics firms. This article identifies the key risks in Indonesia’s operating environment, including the infrastructure bottlenecks and regulatory uncertainty.

7. AFRICA: MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA, GUINEA, TANZANIA AND MOZAMBIQUE

This article identifies a selection of indicators used in Foresight Political Risk to forecast the risk of countries tightening the terms under which mining companies operate (e.g. raise taxes or increase state ownership of projects). We focus on four African countries (South Africa, Guinea, Tanzania and Mozambique) with significant mining interests, score these indicators and highlight how national mining policies are likely to change.
